4140 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. It is stronger and tougher than the mild steel used in most small hardware, so fine threads hold up to repeated assembly.

Where to use them
Use them where a full-size machine would have a hex bolt: cylinder covers, steam chests, frames, brackets and pipe flanges. The reduced head keeps the fastener in proportion with the model instead of looking oversized.
